BY MIKE METTLER – FEBRUARY 26, 2018
Canadian indie-rockers Sloan have announced the release date for their 12th studio album, appropriately titled Sloan 12, as April 6, 2018, via Murderecords/Yep Roc Records. You can listen to the lead track “The Day Will Be Mine” here, and you can pre-order the album here.
Sloan are one of those rare bands to make it to their 12th album with all four original members intact, and 12 includes each of their equally prolific songwriters having penned three songs apiece. The band is said to have been eager to initiate more creative cross-pollination in their songwriting, with each individual contributing the qualities that play into their core strengths: guitarist/vocalist Patrick Pentland with soaring rock anthems, bassist/vocalist Chris Murphy with playful, participatory singalongs, guitarist/vocalist Jay Ferguson with jaunty prog-pop gems, and drummer Andrew Scott with whimsical innerspace explorations.
Sloan clearly have a lot of layers to their sonic palette, and The SoundBard can confirm they also know how to deliver the goods.
In comparing 12 to their last album, 2014’s Commonwealth, Ferguson says, “That album was more of everyone retreating to corners to produce and sequence a side of their own material, [while] this one would potentially have more collaboration than usual.” While the 12 songs on Sloan 12 emphasize each member’s distinct personality, they’re all ultimately united by a sense of lean economy and punchy precision.
Sloan is a Toronto-based rock band from Halifax, Nova Scotia, having first performed in spring of 1991. Sloan are credited as being a main instigator for the Canadian East Coast alternative scene of the early ’90s, garnering comparisons to that era’s Seattle grunge movement on the opposite coast. Over the course of their quarter-century career, Sloan have amassed over 200 songs in their catalog, and have more than 30 singles with featured airplay at Canadian Rock Radio. Sloan have received nine Juno Award nominations, winning for Best Alternative Album in 1997. Recently, the band was named one of Canada’s Top 5 bands of all-time in a CBC critics poll.
Additionally, Sloan have announced an extensive 2018 tour, with over 30 dates across North America set to feature a good number of songs from 12 in the setlist. Full itinerary after the 12 track listing below, with more dates to be added soon.
